The Cherokee society is a matrilineal society; meaning clanship is attained through the mother. There are seven clans in Cherokee society: Bird, Blue, Deer, Long Hair, Paint, Wild Potato & Wolf. The knowledge of one’s clan is very important. It is forbidden to marry within your clan. Clan members are considered brothers and sisters. Seating at ceremonial stomp dances is by clan, as well.
